A tree for Maia to sleep under

I told you that I was re-doing Maia’s room a bit for her birthday, right? Well, I painted a tree on one side of the room.

I saw a tree muralĀ in the West Elm furniture catalog — used as a backdrop for tables — and pretty much copied it straight off the page. I used pencil first, to sketch it on the wall, then wall paint and a small brush.

Now we just need to get her a bed!

We’ll probably put it where the trike is in this picture so she can sleep under the tree canopy. We have glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling of our room and may need to put some in here as well for the finishing touch.

Why is that we parents get so excited about the silly things we do for our kids?

Oooh, that is just lovely! We have clouds and beach grass painted in our daughter’s room and she just loves it. What a marvelous place to sleep…”under the tree canopy.” What sweet dreams Maia will have. Beautiful.

  2. Very sweet – I love it!

I am in love with the tree! I have the same idea for my son’s room. He is 3 and just got a bed of his own about a month ago, and it has been a pretty easy transition. Good luck!

So cool! I hope that helps to ease her transition and make her feel like her room is a comfy place to sleep! I know I’d want to sleep next to a tree like that. =)

  9. Nice work. It is just beautiful and I especially love the doves. :)

I saw that catalogue, too! What is sad is that I spent so much time decorating the girls’ bedroom and after 27 months we are finally getting ready to move them into their own room…and planning to move by the end of the year. I’m already planning the next room, though. LOL

  12. Wow, that is stunning!

Great idea Jean. The tree is beautiful. Did you use a projector to draw it or did you just free hand it?

She’ll love it and with all the special touches you’ve put in she’ll feel the love as well.

  15. Thanks for the comments everyone! Sara – I just drew it freehand. We don’t have a projector, but I imagine that would work as well. -Jean

That is so beautiful. Your daughter is lucky to have such a creative and loving mom. What girl wouldn’t feel special.

I think we get so excited about kids room decor because it’s always so FUN, whereas the norm is for our adult space to be so… serious.

I saw a tree painted on a wall behind a dining table at IKEA, but with ancestral photos hung on it. I WILL be painting a family tree somewhere in our house now.

Love your work! I hope Mia does too.

I love it. Murals in kids’ room are so much fun. Although, when I painted my son’s room last year, I was a little worried it would teach him that painting on the walls was okay.

Wow, Jean! Now if only you lived closer, so I could pay you to do that to my room!! :) I can’t even draw an acceptable cat picture! My son is the family artist. He spends hours drawing fantastic monsters (friendly ones) and creatures. I hope he keeps it up! He just started kindergarten yesterday, by the way. It was so much better than I’d expected. By the time I was ready to leave him, he was in “play mode” and almost completely ignoring me! He’s up early this morning, waiting patiently until it’s time to get ready for another school day! :-D

  21. Glad the transition went well, Andrea! I know you were worried about it. -Jean

My son had one of these painted in his room for years…complete with a painted on ‘etched’ heart with Mom loves Michael written on it. We only recently painted over it as we figured he deserved a teen room and we made sure to take many pictures before painting. At one point he was so into wildlife that he had his stuffed monkeys and some plastic snakes ‘hanging’ from the branches of the tree.

What a beautiful tree! We have a tree that we just painted in our living room/playroom. We all find it not only restful, but also a center point in our imaginative play! :) I think I enjoy looking at it as much as my boys…
