An Autumn tree for the felt board

I cut out some felt pieces for Maia’s new felt board yesterday. I thought I’d start with something seasonal so made a tree, some fall leaves, and a jack-o-lantern.

I have so many ideas (many borrowed) for other felt pieces: a farm scene, storyboards, the alphabet, numbers, games, build-your-own-flowers, dress-up dolls, animals and their homes, under the sea, and, of course, other seasonal and holiday scenes.

This might seem a stupid question but… How do the felt shapes stay on the board? :x

  2. Looks like a gorgeous fall day…what a beautiful tree. I’m down in Florida and I always get so jealous of Northerners this time of year. And I know you’re in North Carolina, but you’re all Northerners to me. :)

I had no idea how many felt board ideas are out there. That aquarium one is amazing!

Great minds think alike! I posted a seasonal felt board set just yesterday. Huge hit with my 2 1/2 yo old son. HUGE! I love the way you did your leaves. And with that bare tree you now have the base for the other 3 seasons, too.

I also do stories he likes Jemima Puddleduck is a current fav. On my blog in early Sept if you want to check it out.

I love what you’ve done there with the tree! Looking at your jack-o-lantern gave me another idea, too; what if you made a big modular jack-o-lantern, with different eyes, noses, mouths, etc., and let Maia decorate its face in different ways? Sort of a Halloween version of Mr. Potato Head. =)

  6. Tania – Felt just sticks to felt (and flannel) because of the fuzzy brushed surface. It works a little like velcro but the connection isn’t as strong.

Jonah Lisa – I love your seasonal felt board set! I just took a look.

Erica – The big modular jack-0-lantern idea is great. I may give it a try…

I love the tree! And that little jack-o-lantern is too cute!

I have a farm scene and simple geometric shapes for pattern construction but have been wanting to make a rocket/sky set. I also think it would be fun to do one that goes along with a book like chicka chicka boom boom. Love the idea of dress up dolls, making them kind of like paper dolls. Maybe I’ll do that for my daughter when she’s older.

I love what you’ve done here! Beautiful! Do you use 100% wool felt for everything, or just to cover the board?

I googled felt tree with leaves & your pictures came up. I was trying to see if there was a pre-made set out there before I make one. I need this for my church. I’ll be doing green leaves this spring, but I love the idea of having additional fall colored ones. I was wondering what you used as a pattern for the tree & leaves, or did you just freehand it? Did you use standard polyester felt or real wool felt? I’d love some help. Thanks for the great ideas!

I had tons of those felt board sets when I was a little kid – loved em! I haven’t seen them in the shops ever, but now I feel pretty stupid for not realizing it would be so damn easy to make your own…
